Having great content that people want to share and link to -- via normal links on websites or socially on sites like Twitter -- and having a good social media presence will become increasingly important.

Many companies have been employing social media as a part of their marketing strategy, and for good reason.  Now that it impacts SEO, companies that don't take social media seriously are really going to be left behind.

As with any other ranking factors, it's not crystal clear what specific things will help more than others, but this ranking factor is sure to be refined to help elevate the best content being shared by real influential people.

It's [http://searchengineland.com/what-social-signals-do-google-bing-really-count-55389 official]. In general, the more '''quantity and quality of tweets''' that link to your website the more of a lift you can expect to see in your search engine rankings for the linked-to page or pages.

==#1 Tweet Text Around Link==

It's likely that the text around a link is or will be used to help search engines determine what the link is about.  Tweet text may play a similar role to [[Glossary/Anchor-Text|anchor text]] in links, which can help the linked to page rank better for the keywords in the anchor text of the link.

==#2 Author Quality/Authority & Real People==

So the point is... using bots or cheap labor to create a ton of Twitter accounts and tweet links to your site will be a spam-y waste of time and money.  If you notice a spam Twitter account, do this:

Signals that can tell people and search engines if an account is authoritative or real:

*Presence of an avatar or portrait

*Has the account been verified? Did the person confirm their email address? (People can't see this, but Twitter would have this info and the search engines may be able to get it.)

*More followers, and quality ones

*Better if profile URL doesn't match domain being tweeted?

*Avoid #s in your Twitter handle (Many spam accounts on Twitter have usernames like Name8765)

*Filled in bio

*Engagement -- accounts that never @ people certainly seem spam-y to me.

*Listed on more lists

The idea of author quality is much like PageRank.  The idea is that a link from 100 different PageRank 0 pages might provide the same SEO value as one link from a page with a good amount of PageRank.  A tweet from a respected and high profile person with a lot of followers will be worth more -- SEO and otherwise -- than 100 tweets from spam-y bot accounts.

Think of it this way, who would you rather have link to your website?

==Share==

Make it easy for people to share your content on Twitter (and other places, too) and ask them to.

==Good Content==

Think about the kinds of things that you retweet or link to on Twitter.  Make sure your content is good enough...

==Build Followers so more people see your tweets==

==Points==

* Only public accounts, not locked... because search engine can't get to those.

* Building traditional backlinks to your website is still very important. Links from Twitter are a new tool to help your SEO, but they can only do so much.

* NoFollow...

==What do we know? Case Studies:==

----

One website [http://www.seomoz.org/blog/tweets-effect-rankings-unexpected-case-study noticed] they suddenly ranked on the first page for a generic keyword right after they were linked to by a prominent Twitter account -- with more than 350,000 followers -- and that tweet was retweeted more than 100 times.

For [http://www.seomoz.org/blog/how-do-tweets-influence-search-rankings-an-experiment-for-a-cause another experiment] people were asked to link to one page or tweet a link to another page. The results were that the page that was linked to via 522 tweets outranked the page that received 646 links from 36 different domains. (See image at right from Randfish's presentation at SearchFest.)

What don't we know for sure?

* How long will the SEO boost from Twitter links last? It's believe that the SEO boost from a Twitter link will decrease or go away over time. The Twitter SEO boost from links in tweets is likely less permanent or constant like a normal link from a website.

* If you're going to get x amount of tweets linking to a given page, is it better if they're retweets with the same content or uniquely written tweets?

Time will tell as we have more long-term data from experiments like the ones above.

This is another step making SEO and search engine algorithms more complicated, and hopefully better equipped to produce good search results. In today's social Web it makes sense to take into account more links than just the ones on regular websites and not leave all the information and sharing on social networks on the table.
