Difference between revisions of "Connecting Network Weavers with Tutor/Mentor Connection"

As a follow up to the Network Weavers' 30 June 2007 conference call Daniel Bassill wrote this text on his talk page. TedErnst then moved the text here.

Among the next steps listed in the minutes to the June 30 conference call was "Set up a network weavers site on various sites and Start working on specific projects with different weavers (ie: David’s project and developing a support network for his project and use it as a model for local-driven network weaving – and – support Daniel’s project which purpose driven project – tutor/mentoring young people) "

For those who want to work with the Tutor/Mentor Connection (Daniel's project) I invite you to use this thread to discuss what that might mean and ways you might get involved.

At http://tutormentor.blogspot.com/2007/07/international-connections-to-england.html I show a graphic that represents how a network weaver can draw members of his network into an information-based discussion that leads individuals and/or groups of people to become leaders, volunteers and/or donors in tutor/mentor programs of Chicago or any other city.

If network weavers reach out to their networks in August, via blogs, email, web casts, etc. they can encourage involvement in tutor/mentor programs at a time of the year when every volunteer-based tutor/mentor program in the country is looking for volunteers, leaders and donors. Thus, getting more people to think and learn about ways and places to get involved will lead to actual involvement of more people.

In the links on my blog and the http://www.tutormentorconnection.org web site I point to places where people can get involved, and examples of people linking their networks to this information. As members of the Network Weavers network engage their networks, all they need to do is post a message and web link here, to show what they did. As that list grows, we'll build a list of examples of how Network Weavers are helping the Tutor/Mentor Connection, and how they can help similar causes.

Daniel, I just spent some time at the Tutor/Mentor Connection - registered and left an introduction in your forum. Let me repeat my question from the google groups. What do you see as the next step in applying Social Network Analysis to T/MC and what we want to show funders? David Braden

Next Steps

David and friends. To me the next step is providing a dedicated body who can spend 10 hours a week on this project. That person would help us think through what it is I'm trying to so with SNA, and how the rest of you can help, and what the benefits might be to other organizations if we were successful in creating the type of TMC SNA that helps me most with what I'm trying to do.

Without that type of manpower I'm not able to think this through, or present it as clearly as needs be, for any of you to take a next step of helping me.

This illustrates the role of one person connecting members of h/her network to the Tutor/Mentor Connection and its network. If you think of a wheel, the hub is the Tutor/Mentor Connection (and the individual programs in our database) and each spoke is someone who takes on the role of network weaver, connecting the people they know to the hub. My goal is to be able to put names of people taking on network weaver, or leadership roles, in each of the boxes on this type of a chart, and to map the network of people that they connect to the T/MC and to each other.

As a SNA process, I'd like to someone to be able to code my database so that we know who is connected to who. However, I'd also like to be able to code it by where someone lives, what work they do, where they went to school, etc. so that I could create a SNA wheel chart, that could be sorted by any of these categories to show who in may network might be lawyers, from Chicago, or from NotreDame. Thus, if I was trying to mobilize lawyers in Chicago, I would not only know what lawyers in Chicago are in my database, but know who might be the best person to try to draw them to gether, or to invite other lawyers to participate.

How can we get someone from each of these into our community so they would contribute to its success, not necessarily just to the success of a T/MC based project?

There are many ways people can work together to help kids in Chicago and other cities connect with people and resources that help these kids stay safe in non school hours, stay in school, and stay headed to careers. I'm trying to connect people and organizations, as well as donors and business partners, with information they can use in many places to make this happen.

I'm willing to help such a discussion grow here, or on Ned, or in any other forum that might be recommended. At the end of 2008 we need to show that we have done something that increases the knowledge we have available to us, increases the number of people looking at this knowlege, increases the understanding of this knowledge, and increases the resources needed for volunteer-tutor/mentor programs to operate and keep kids and volunteers connected to each other.

If you know people who are involved in this type of work, please introduce them.
