SEO or Search Engine Optimization is a division of Search Engine Marketing or SEM that is concerned with providing advice and help on designing websites with an eye towards providing good search results (namely your company and website ranks high on search engines (like Google and Yahoo!). Such advice centers on how search algorithms work and what people search for. SEO help then provides suggestions in the site's coding, presentation, structure and unique content that is "search engine friendly," thus promoting your company by how it indexes on a variety of search engines. Specialization can also target specific search engines, image searches, local search and industry specific search engines.

SEO providers help website owners write copy, give advice on site architecture and help find relevant directories in which a site can be submitted. There are, however, "Black Hat" SEO companies that have given the industry a bad name via their overly aggressive marketing efforts and their manipulation of search engine results.

"White hat" SEO folks create search engine friendly pages which work in conjuction with Search Engine guidelines. The Internet is the life blood of many companies and a good SEO strategy can really help. When websites are optimized properly, their visibility can increase significantly and visitors who search for related keywords are more likely to find these sites.

Accessibility plays a key role in determining the placement of a website within a search engines result pages (SERPS). Text which is embedded within images or nested deep within code may be overlooked by a search engine. This inaccessibility may keep a website from ranking for a term or phrase important to the success of the websites marketing strategy.
