Burlington Vermont - Hotels, Real Estate, Restaurants and Attractions

Excerpted from the website:

Burlington’s history dates back to the American Revolution, when Ethan Allen cleared land and settled near the mouth of the Winooski River, which today flows around Burlington. The first town meeting was held in 1787, and the University of Vermont was established three years later. By the War of 1812, Burlington was one of the most important ports in the United States, facilitating trade with Canada primarily for lumber. In 1823, the Lake Champlain Canal was completed, and an uninterrupted waterway from New York City to Montreal was opened. Burlington continued to grow after that as a port city and a center of lumber industry. Recently, however, Burlington’s economic focus on big industry has begun to retreat a bit with the emergence of technology and smaller industries in the area. In the 1990s, Burlington undertook a revitalization of their downtown area and reclaimed many of the abandoned industrial buildings that lined their gorgeous lakefront, opening it up for the visual pleasure and the enjoyment of all.
