My name is Ken Wright. I received a mechanical engineering degree in 1984 from Canada's University of BC. For several years I worked for small companies in hydraulics. My first project was with Concice Exportise whose owner, Ray Wood, invented a small single piston eccentric drive hydraulic pump used in marine steering systems, in particular auto pilots on sailboats. I worked on a 10,000 rpm reverse osmosis water filtration system for the US Navy under Peter Wild -where are you today? Then as sole employee under Mike Duff of Hydra-Tech of North Vancouver BC there were many interested projects including design and builds of a hydraulics system for a BC ferries terminal, manufacture of a wheel wear measuring device for Vancouver's ALRT system, diamond tip cutting blade truing machine/ pneumatic grinder. What fun to work in machine shops and in the local community of North Vancouver,BC involved in world class technology development. With Hydra-Tech we were hired to design a machine that would make type B gas vents automatically. It would displace 9 workers. The machine was never built but that union lowered its demands when it saw the drawings and our quote to build the machine. Note to Mike Duff- Thats why we didn't get the contract to build the beast!! The mats in the machine shop I was working in at Hydra-Tech were the prototype solar panels being developed across the industrial park! I literally was introduced to the solar panel that became Powermat as my workbooks drove metal filings into the black matte finished surface of that top layer 0.030" flexible vinyl sheet as I was assembling a hydraulic machine. Next I stepped into an entrepreneurial vacancy running an engineering company whose sole employee was taking a real job across the country. I became a partner in Nu-Tec Engineering Ltd and we did some gov't contracts such as removal of a 5000 gallon underground oil storage tank. I needed a viable opportunity at this time and someone at a business lunch brought up the fact that solar pool heating was an up and coming hot consruction industry opportunity. Then out of the blue my friend from University Ivo Kokan wanted me to meet Robb Protheroe and see his radio frequency welding equipment that makes solar panels! Seriously, It was like Kharma was forcing me to choose to take on this product. I started with mail order exclusive rights to the product and ads in Popular Mechanics and Popular Science magazines. My idea was to make solar technology availoable to do it yiourselfers in kit form. All my business needed was some kind of extraordinary miracle like the internet. While I awaited that, I ran Nu-Tec Solar Co. and did full solar systems for pools in Vancouver with two other main competitors as well as some pool companies that offered it using Enersol epdm tubing systems. By 1989 it was time to buy out the manufacturing company. They didn't have proper ways to attach these things to roofs. Becoming a solar manufacturer in a competitive market was much more involved than any of the original owners anticipated. The main owner was Fred Gardewick. He was a founder and had an exclusive to Western Canada for Insinkerator. He distributed some other plumbing parts such as vinyl shower pan liners (flexible vinyl sheets-same as Powermats). All these experiences tie together. I was an entrepreneur at heart (aren't we all) and Kharma was telling me what I had to do. We developed an improved method of mounting Powermat solar panels to roofs.

It was his baby. We got gov't grants and matching loans and financed the Powermat solar collector which was the original "Solarmat" product with a mounting system developed using the experiences I gained by actually selling and installing a lot of systems and I must admit Robb Protheroe proved himself as an excellent engineer who knew how to get a job done. Our Powermat mounting systems with aluminum edges were so sophisticated and unique that this product truly stood alone. It was high efficiency, grid style yet it was flexible so it could freeze solid (not the headers) so it could be used on flat roofs. The aluminum frame allowed the system to be hung from tile roofs with no roof penerations and the stiff edge meant wind wouldn't get an uplift started.

Technical challenges prevented full scale marketing. Robb moved on and I kept working on it. I solved all the production hassles and fine tuned the implementation side of the business and did a good business implementing solar pool heaters. Another marketable application was hot water pre-heating and in 1992 I hired Joe Thwaites (who now owns Vancouver's prominent solar energy company, Taylor Munro Energy Systems) to work under a gov't grant to develop a solar water preheater using Powermats. It made more economic sense than boxed and glazed collectors. My first web site explains this wonderful system if anyone wants to finance trying to put it on the market? I'll get back to it some day. Its just not high on the viability list. Solar pool heating is a huge industry and the economic realities are much more attractive but don't get me wrong. Solar water preheaters using boxed and glazed collectors are a 6 to 12 year payback period.
