New Zealand’s isolation has meant that most goods, both imported and exported, tend to be transported by sea freight. This is a slow and expensive means of transportation.

Frequently this has resulted in solutions being ingeniously invented in many backyard sheds and small engineering factories; something often referred to locally as the No. 8 wire approach. (Read – most things can be repaired with No. 8 gauge fencing wire which is used extensively in the agriculture and viticulture industries.). This mentality has ensured that New Zealand culture has evolved to be very self reliant and exceptionally innovative.
