It is a public company that has been producing and marketing since 1869 and today employs more than 24,000 employees.

History

The company was originally started by Joseph Campbell and Abraham Anderson as Anderson and Campbell in 1969, in Camden, New Jersey. It was called Joseph Campbell Producing Company. It initially canned tomatoes, vegetables, jellies, condiments and mincemeat. However, seven years later, Joseph Campbell dissolved the partnership with Anderson and bought all his shares. This expanded the business and they began to can meats, sauces, plum pudding, ketchup and canned fruits. However, as the company outstripped its competitors in making different varieties of soup, it stopped manufacturing other products.

So, it was renamed Joseph Campbell Company in 1905, with the company successfully manufacturing canned condensed soup and selling it in California. This earned them Global fame, and soon they even bought Franco-American Food Company. They slowly pierced the food market, that was still very small, and soon they were selling 16 million cans a year. After they acquired Franco-American Company, the name was changed to Campbell Soup Company. In 1931, it started rising to fame with radio advertising. In 1954, Campbell soups went public with its stocks, slowly making it a public company. The next year, they incorporated C.A. Swanson & Sons, which slowly took them into the frozen food business.

As they steadily became popular, they also took control of Pepperidge Farm Incorporated. 1970 saw their chunky, ready-to-serve soup making its debut and becoming all the rage. It also saw Campbell entering the restaurant business with the acquisition of Peitro’s Pizza parlors. In the year 1974 Campbell Soups expanded even more with the acquisition of Godiva Chocolatier Incorporation. Vlastic Foods Inc. also joined Campbell Soups in 1978. Prego Spaghetti Sauces began to be manufactured in 1981. In 1995, Campbell Soups bought Pace Foods Ltd. for a huge sum of $1.1 billion. In 1998, the company began focusing on the four major areas that were soups, sauces and beverages, biscuits and confectionary and other foodservice. In 2001, Campbell soups went through a much needed revitalizing program with the new CEO Douglas R. Conant. In the same year they also bought European brands from Unilever, and expanded their business into Europe as well.
