- Grassroots politics is a network of ordinary rank-and-file citizens who work their advocacy from the base of the political pyramid. Grassroots efforts are defined by attitude and dedication rather than positions of leadership although Grassroots movements often spawn great leaders. America's founders were ardent Grassroots advocates who realized the importance of participating in government. The Boston Tea Party in 1773 was a prime example of early American grassroots activism, when colonists dumped forty-five tons of British tea into Boston Harbor to protest taxation without representation.
