Description
The 'Yoga Center' was founded in 1994 with the germ idea that it would act as a 'center' of an expanding circle of practices and traditions. Its orientation was one of honouring all wisdom traditions while remaining free of any sectarianism. The 'center' intends to remain multivocal in its interpretations of each tradition.
Our Shakti is Gauri. Gauri co-directs the Madrid 'Yoga Centers' and co-ordinates the AIPYS Hatha Yoga training programme. She was a direct disciple of Swami Vishnudevananda for many years during which time she was responsible for Hatha Yoga training to the Hispanic students. Gauri has created a unique pedagogical system for the training of Yoga Teachers. Her innovative method combines traditional Hatha Yoga principles with precise anatomical corrections. In her courses she maintains high expectations while maintaining a healthy sense of humour throughout. Discipline, commitment, and humour are her trademarks.
Westley Eckhardt (aka Shanmugananda) is co-director and co-founder of the 'Yoga Center'. He is a Psychologist, BSc Hons., board member of AIPYS and co-founder of EFYTA. He was a direct disciple and personal assistant of Swami Vishnudevananda. For 13 years, he directed Yoga Ashrams in Canada and the Bahamas. He has trained thousands of students, during close to 30 years teaching Yoga and the Indian spiritual tradition. He directs the meditation courses in the 'Yoga Center' and teaches and supervises the teaching of Indian Philosophy and the Yoga Tradition in the Yoga Teacher Training programmes. He maintains a multivocal interpretation of traditions while honouring their uniqueness. His views can be provocative but they are always enlightening as they uncover the deeper secrets of the traditions and the questions they provoke.
