Xanga is one of those websites which allow you to host photoblogs, weblogs and even maintain your social networking profiles. It is maintained and run by Xanga.com, Incorporated, which is based in the USA. It was started in 1998 as a site where you could share books and music reviews. It has now become one of the most well known and popular networking and blogging service online. At present there are around 20 million users from all over the world. Xanga has been rated as the 21st most renowned English language website and 42nd in all the languages. The members are called Xangas.
Features
The website has free service and provides an array of services as mentioned earlier. It is a favorite hang out place especially for teenagers because of the flexibility it offers. They can post as many times as they want and also make comments in other members’ journals.. There is a personal website available for each Xanga member and he can make his posts here. Those who are not a member of the site cannot post comment on it.
The front page of the website is called a weblog. Earlier each Xanga member could make postings to other member’s site anonymously, but due to various problems it was discontinued. For uploading the photos the Xangans are provided free storage space of 200 MB and premium members are provided extra 2 GB space. This allows the Xangas to indulge in photo blog and the new tools allow streamlined back publishing too.
You can do some social networking on Xanga by searching and connecting with friends. You may even form your own community/groups or find old friends here. There is a feature called blogring. It is a circle of common theme weblogs. All that you have to do is fill up the profile fields required. The video blog and the audio blog facility are also very popular. You may search the blogrings with the help of a topic. A Xanga user is permitted to form up to 8 blogrings.
Metro
The metro feature of Xanga is very popular. It gives the visitor or another member an idea of the geographic area where the other member lives. However it is restricted to the names of the metros for safety reasons. If you wish to know a Xangan better you may leave a comment on his site.
Registration
Although there is free registration at the site, there are two types of subscriptions for added features. The premium membership and the premium memberships are entitled to additional space and other features. Like all other similar sites, Xanga also faces some of common problems. Some of the pages on Xanga are used by subscribers for pornography and this problem has not been solved yet. The members post inappropriate pictures of themselves or others on these pages. It is often said that the Xanga site is offering too much freedom to its user’s ad this freedom is being misused too.
