Description

CBS Televisions Stations Group (Formerly Paramount Stations Group), a division of CBS Inc., officially entered the Atlanta market September 1, 1995, acquiring WVEU-TV from BCG Communications, which held the license since sign-on in 1981. On December 11, 1995 the call letters were changed to reflect the new ownership and direction for WUPA-TV. In 1996 WUPA was named the United Paramount Network affiliate of the year.

Starting in 2001, WUPA embarked on a new localism strategy by branding the station UPN Atlanta and developing local programming. April 2003 was the start date for Atlanta Tonight and UPN Atlanta News hour. The UPN Atlanta News at 10, a co-venture between WXIA and UPN aired at 10p Monday through Sunday and was followed immediately by Atlanta Tonight, a locally produced program covered everything Atlanta, including events, openings, and restaurants.

In January 2006, the television industry was stunned by the announced merger of UPN and The WB into a new network, The CW. As Atlanta’s CW affiliate CW Atlanta will now be the destination for the best programming from both networks. This fall will usher in a new era for the Atlanta market and CW Atlanta will be at the heart of this exciting entertainment phenomenon.
