Description

Wondergirl is an emerging young queer visual artist and photographer. Wondergirl's digital work has been recognized by both mainstream and independent media publications over the last eight years. Her recent political advocacy around the rights and awareness of sex-positive sex work has been most recently acclaimed. Wondergirl received a Bachelors of the Arts from one of the nation's premier private liberal arts colleges where she focused on gender and cultural studies, feminist and queer theory, photography, and studio art. Her thesis installation challenged dominant cultural notions of perversity in visual representation. Wondergirl lives in New York City and still provides a glimpse in to her life via this website a decade after it's emergence.

We are most aware of our own humanity through the engagement of fear and subsequent manifestations as pain and pleasure. Testing the limits of one's physical and emotional existence can be enticing, evocative, and arousing. The art of sadomasochism is a way in which the sensual capacity of the body and the mind can be explored.

This body of work is a visual exploration of perversity intended to complicate social negativity towards this particular marginalized sexual group through the documentation of consensual BDSM (Bondage Discipline Sado-Masochism) rituals in both abstract and representational forms. Through the use of mixed media and digital photography, my work has situated itself in the discourses of gender, power, desire, and the performative. I question the social lenses that distort the representations of sexual subcultures. Focusing on modern practices of BDSM and fetishism, I attempt to remove the body and the flesh from connotations of degradation and objectification, examining the ways in which we perceive the erotic and the subjectivity western society denies it. I am interested in fetishism not solely as an erotization of the non-genital and non-corporeal, but also as an eroticization of space.
