Notice of Appreciation and Acknowledgment
The structure and layout of My home site, http://wolfram.org, was created as a personal study in web site usability. I followed (most of) the advice and I pay heavy homage to a leader in useable design, Jakob Nielsen. Many of the concepts underlying the structure of this site reflect his teachings. Learn more about web site usability by reading Jakob Nielsen's books and web site -- http://useit.com. I also learned a lot from the teachings of Philip Greenspun and the good people at OpenACS.
Why I built this site
Beyond building this site as a personal study in information design, this site is a result of the combination of my beliefs in: Honesty, openness, organization and freedom of information. First, these beliefs effected my business life and then I understood that I needed a personal site too.
First, for the business example, check out my company Gnosio. In particularly, look how we are open with information. Notice the lack of marketing subtrafuge. Then notice the a page that lists and links to all of our competition! The page is called "software solutions for property management" (find out why we do that here). Notice our pricing and server uptime is available. There is so much more information deep in the site -- and we use it every day while running our company. Our organization on-line saved us so much time when we were running Gnosio, that I wanted to do the same thing on a personal level.
