Where There Be Dragons - Learning Adventures in the Developing World

Dragons programs are authentic, rugged and profound learning adventures that expose the beautiful and complex realities of the countries in which we travel. Featuring extended itineraries, Dragons programs encourage deep immersion into strikingly different physical and cultural landscapes, combining the best in experiential education, travel, service learning, and physically and intellectually challenging experiences.

While programs vary in their focus - with some trekking and wilderness intensive, others strong on service and development studies, and still others language-oriented - all Dragons journeys are designed above all else to be fun, safe and honest educational experiences.

On ancient maps Dragons were drawn to symbolize the unknown, and to travel beyond the familiar world was to go "where there be dragons." There are people who live their lives for adventure, exploration and knowledge - people who are willing to venture into the unknown for the sake of discovery. For those people, we offer incredible experiences. We hope you are one of them. Where do you want to go?

Description

Where There Be Dragons provides intimate, off-the-beaten-path travel programs for inspired students, schools and adult groups to CHINA, THAILAND, VIETNAM, CAMBODIA, INDIA, NEPAL, TIBET, BOLIVIA, PERU, GUATEMALA, BRAZIL, MOROCCO, SENEGAL and RWANDA. Rugged, creative, and engaging journeys that combine home-stays, service work, foreign language study, trekking, exploration, internships and cultural studies.

Dragons programs are the finest, best-staffed, and best-executed overseas educational experiences available. Each of our courses is, from start to finish, a unique travel adventure that is meditated and managed with exceptional care. With an average group size of ten to twelve participants, we keep our groups small, and with an average of three instructors per group, we maintain a student-to-instructor ratio of 4 to 1. We work with our course instructors to create itineraries and elements that they alone can support. We work closely with each student to identify his or her goals, and we integrate student needs and interests into each itinerary. Finally, we consider the on-the-ground realities of each country in the months preceding the adventure, adjusting itineraries to take advantage of emerging opportunities, while also staying nimble to properly address safety issues.

Our 4 and 6-week summer programs and 3-month semester programs are not tours or conventional trips; rather, they are expertly-lead, low-impact travel adventures that draw the most from on-site learning opportunities. Our custom programs, for schools, families and groups of adults, are meticulously built with tailor-made elements that are an ideal fit to the group's needs.

Over fifteen years, Dragons has worked with highly regarded academics, leading figures in experiential education, and professional risk managers to design an innovative and well-tested core curriculum. We are highly regarded for both our course design as well as the level of care that goes into course implementation. With regional Program Directors, the establishment of on-site "program houses," dedicated and experienced field staff, and a core of program components that support a comprehensive travel experience, Dragons offers the most uniquely-created and best-supported learning adventures in the developing world.

Additional Information

Why Dragons? Since running our first courses in 1993, Dragons has set the standard for overseas experiential education. Critical to our success is the core curriculum that we have developed around our nine program components, bringing consistency and depth to each of our journeys. Also, by integrating our core values of global citizenship, self-exploration, leadership and skill building into all aspects of our operations, we commit ourselves to a high standard of organizational integrity. And by staffing our programs with incomparable instructors, keeping our groups small, and developing personal relationships with extraordinary students, we have developed a program structure that provides the most authentic and honest cross-cultural experiences available.

Who are the students who join us? Participants on Dragons courses are creative, bright, curious people in search of a more honest understanding of human relationships, environmental and social dynamics, and the meaning and value of their existence. Some are looking for an opportunity to stretch the boundaries of their physical limitations; some want to serve others in a meaningful way; some are interested in exploring a different world view; many just want to know how big and diverse the world really is.

How small groups ensure the best experience: Small groups enable us to provide low-to-the-ground, high quality learning adventures wherein we can best address the personal needs, interests and goals of each traveler. The flexibility of small groups enables us to take advantage of a myriad of unique opportunities, like fitting into a nomad's tent or piling into the back of a tractor. All experiences are more personal, interesting, and fun. Most importantly, a small group size allows us to more easily address safety concerns and respond to changes in student health.

Why our field staff make the difference: Dragons instructors are simply the industry's best. Our field staff is composed of mature adults who have years of amazing personal and professional experience, and the skills needed to teach, guide, and empower students in profound ways. Having lived, worked, studied or volunteered overseas, our instructors are able to tap into their unique backgrounds, sharing with students the personal connections that they have made. Furthermore, their first-hand knowledge of in-country risk issues and medical care ensures that safety considerations are paramount in all aspects of course design and implementation.
