About Websmart
Websmart Incorporated was first established as Websmart Consulting in 1996, a web site design company. We serve the areas of Owen Sound, Grey County and Bruce County - and beyond; our portfolio includes clients in Toronto, Alberta and New Brunswick with web site design services and Internet Consulting. Owned and operated by myself, Owen Smart, and my wife Sandra, the business is based in Port Elgin, Ontario - north of Toronto and west of Owen Sound, on Lake Huron.
Websmart began as a part-time business in 1996 to supplement my full-time income. The Internet was just starting to get the attention of the general population and having been a customer of a web site design company I became quickly frustrated with the lack of customer service and knowledge about what the needs of my employer were in the areas of style, marketing, information and promotion. There was a wide gap between what the programmers could do and what the graphic designers (focused on print at that point) could do. Someone was needed who understood both, could take elements from both extremes and create a balance, with a dose of common sense - to take advantage of the distribution of information this new mass medium offered. Today, that role is defined as a web designer or webmaster. A jack of all trades, if you will.
My background and training is in broadcasting - radio and televsion - having spent close to 10 years part time and full time on-air in radio stations in Cambridge, Collingwood, Barrie, Orangeville and Owen Sound, mainly in news gathering and reporting. This background, combined with other past work experiences including Municipal Government, tourism marketing and promotion, trade shows and customer service all are a part of the web sites Websmart builds today...a distinct advantage many other web companies do not have.
