E llie Roden, long-time resident of Vermont, primary school teacher and avid flower gardener, has been working with the pressed flower medium for many years. Prior to selling her works, they were given as gifts; she was always urged by friends and family to make these unique creations available to all.
O nly real plant materials are used in Ellie’s designs, and most flowers are from her gardens, woodlands, roadsides and the gardens of generous neighbors. Over the years she has come to observe and appreciate what others overlook: tiny leaves, weeds, tendrils on wild cucumber and zucchini plants, seed pods, etc. The timing of picking and pressing is key. The optimal time to pick flowers is at midday when it is sunny and dry. New leaves and flowers retain color better than ones that have been on the plant for days. Rapid drying diminishes fading so in recent years she has opted to press and dry the plant material in a microwave as well as the traditional method. An acrylic sealer and UV protection glass are used to further ensure the vibrant colors of flowers will be maintained for many, many years.
L arge framed pictures, cards and bookmarks are the usual result of Ellie's designs. She also enjoys making customized invitations, announcements, bookmarks for wedding and party favors and pressing bridal bouquets.
