Description
The Vashon Education Compact is a commitment to focus on schools as a centerpiece in urban revitalization. Too often school reform is absent community, development and new housing and other community efforts overlook the schools in the heart of the community. The Vashon Education Compact is unique because it is comprehensive in its approach.
The building of a new $35 million Vashon High School in the JeffVanderLou neighborhood of St. Louis is serving as a catalyst for a comprehensive neighborhood redevelopment called the Vashon/JeffVanderLou Initiative. This 10-year effort seeks to bring new life to the JeffVanderLou neighborhood in the City of St. Louis by focusing on housing, health and human services, economic development and education. It seeks to rebuild not only the physical landscape in JeffVanderLou, but the quality of life for the people who live there.
The goal of the Vashon Education Compact is to improve student achievement in 10 St. Louis Public Schools located in and around the JeffVanderLou neighborhood.
