VALA - Visual Arts/Language Arts for Kids in the Public Schools

Description

Bettina Rotenberg, worked with six classrooms in three schools, and the work the children produced after the first year was exhibited in the Berkeley Store Gallery.

As VALA expands, the structure of its classes has opened to make room for a range of new artists in music, theater, ceramics, sculpture, painting, bookmaking, dance, poetry, narrative, mask making, and shadow play puppetry. Children are also introduced to a variety of cultural themes through VALA programs. Currently, VALA's artists are 60% people of color and introduce children to their own cultures as well as completely new cultures.

The VALA Project uses movement, collage and painting to reinforce the learning of letters, and teach the children that writing can involve movement, music, and visual expression, as the children make the shapes of the "letters" with their hands, arms, bodies, crayons, collage materials, and paints.
