Located in University Park Neighborhood of Los Angeles, University of Southern California was established in 1880 thus making it the oldest private research University of California. The university only had 53 students and 10 teachers then which has grown to 33,000 students and about 3,200 faculty members. It is a private and coeducational university with a rich endowment of $3.1 billion. The campus located in a urban settlement has an area of about 235 acres. Marion M. Bovard was the first president of the university from1880-1891 and Steven B. Sample is the current president since 1991.

The university has many notable alumni. The most popular is astronaut Neil Armstrong, the first man to set foot on the moon. The university has many notable alumni members which include Academicians, Architects, Artists, Astronauts, Athletes, Entrepreneurs, Film and Television artists, musicians, politicians, print and broadcast media personalities and many more.

Reputation

According to the 2007 rankings released by U.S News the university is ranked 17th in the country for undergraduate programs. It is among the top ten private universities receiving federal funds for research and development. Its School of Cinematic Arts is ranked 1st and School of Architecture 6th.

Enrollment

Number of undergraduate student enrollment is about 16,500. Number of graduate and post-graduate is about 16,500 too. The minority representation in the college is 1% American Indian/Alaskan Native, 21% Asian/Pacific Islander, 5% Black/Non-Hispanic and 10% Hispanic/Latino. The faculty strength is about 3,200.

Press

The university has a student newspaper known as Daily Trojan. It also has a family magazine by name Trojan Family Magazine. They also publish weekly magazines on health, law and urban education.
