US Airways Group Inc is an airline holding company that operates US Airways, US Airways Express and America West Airlines and is based in Temple, Arizona . It also provides associated services as it operates additional companies. The combined airways group forms one of the largest and low cost airline network providing its services all over U.S. The network covers numerous international destinations and 47 states in U.S. The group is named under a single brand name US Airways. Approximately 4000 flights per day are served. U.S. Airways and America West's recent merger creates the fifth largest domestic airline company employing nearly 38,000 aviation professionals. US Airways is a member of the Star Alliance, which was established in 1997 as the first truly global airline alliance to offer customers global reach and a smooth travel experience.

History

Before being acquired by America West Holdings Corporation, US Airways Group was based in Arlington County, Virginia. On May 19, 2005, US Airways Group announced that it would merge along with America West Holdings Corporation, whose strength in the West would complement US Airways' routes in the Northeast, Europe, and the Caribbean. In October 2006, US Airways leased new office space in a building across the street from its Corporate Headquarters In Tempe, Arizona to expand and centralize its Corporate operations. A firm commitment was made by CitiBank to provide cash portion of the merger. The airline that was combined was to be named Delta Airline.Delta Airline then announced its bankrupcy as a stand alone carrier. A meeting was then held and the offer of US Airways was rejected.

Acquisitions

On November 15, 2006, US Airways Group announced a proposal to purchase Delta Air Lines for $8.0 billion, half of this amount to be paid in cash with the remainder to be paid in stock. US Airways Group has obtained a firm commitment from Citibank to provide financing for both the cash portion of the merger offer, as well as the required secured loan refinancing at both airlines. The combined airlines would have flown under the Delta Air Lines name. On January 31,20007 , a decision by the creditors committee to support Delta's standalone reorganization plan was held and US Airways withdrew its merger offer.


Business

US Airways Group, Inc. provides cargo and air transportation facilities for its customers. US Airways Express air carriers had approximately 20 million passengers boarding their planes. Revenues from passengers accounted for approximately 90% of US Airways' operating revenues in 2006. Revenues from cargo and other sources accounted for approximately 10% of US Airways' operating revenues in 2006. US Airways Group, Inc. announces plans to acquire 92 Airbus Aircrafts. Airways Group, Inc. has agreed to terms and conditions with Airbus S.A.S. for 60 single aisle A320 family aircraft and 32 wide body aircraft, including the next generation A350 XWB. The A320 family planes will replace 60 older aircraft in the airline's fleet. The airline is expecting to take delivery of the first A350-800 in 2014. The transaction will also include 60 A320-family aircraft whose delivery will be taken in 2010.

US Airways Group, Inc. started a new service to Zurich, Switzerland from Philadelphia. The Company also initiated new service to Athens, Greece .Seasonal markets were also served which includes Stockholm, Lisbon, Shannon, Venice, Barcelona and Glasgow. So US Airways serves 19 European cities with 22 flights daily.

145 US Airways flights operated late at least 80% of the time in March. The most dreadful of them all: US Airways 2188, a shuttle flight between Washington/National and New York/LaGuardia. It operated late every time it flew in March with an average delay of 55 minutes. The 9 p.m. departure is scheduled for 66 minutes and the actual flying time on the 214-mile route is only around 44 minutes, with much of the delay due to foul weather and the ongoing air-traffic problems surrounding New York area airports.

I love the new fresh layout for US Airways.com it is so much fresher and cleaner the old US Airways site and better colors then the old America West site.
