Description

A subsidiary of NBC Universal and one of the major American film studios, Universal Studios was a product of many evolutions and founded by Carl Laemmle. With partners Abe and Julius Stern, it was first called the Yankee Film Company in 1909, which then grew to become the IMP or Independent Moving Picture Company. In 1912, Laemmle merged with 8 smaller companies to form the Universal Film Manufacturing Company, which provided distribution and promotion services for movies. The name was later changed to Universal Pictures Company, Inc.

In 1945, British entrepreneur J. Arthur Rank bought one-fourth interest in the company. He then signed a merger with International Pictures, a struggling American independent production company, to produce Universal-International Pictures Inc., although distribution and copyright control was still under the name Universal Pictures Company.
