Witten/Herdecke University provides a suitable context for all its members to develop special competences and pursue personal ideals for the benefit of society and environment, under conditions of autonomy and equality. We promote an understanding of other cultures and encourage other universities to expand and redefine freedom for students and researchers alike, with visible consequences for society as a whole.
Freedom is contingent upon responsibility. Members of Witten/Herdecke University assume personal responsibility for what they do and also for a sustained development of their university as a role model for university reforms in Germany. The priviledge of education in freedom implies social responsibility and an obligation to demonstrate exceptional commitment to the common good in society, environment and the scientific community.
