Rashid Khan and Mike Andrade founded Ultimus in 1994. Through their business experience at other companies, Rashid and Mike knew there was a growing and unmet need for companies to improve their efficiency by automating key processes. Together, using their own funds, they started Ultimus with a clear goal: make it easy for customers to automate business or organizational processes without requiring lots of programming or assistance from IT. At the same time, they felt they could use the same software and approach to run their own business much more efficiently.
In the mid-90’s, workflow was one of the hottest technologies in the market. There were lots of well-funded startups claiming they would change the way companies work. Lotus Notes was gaining traction as a groupware platform, and its mail-enabled application capability was an early “workflow” technology. With all the hype, most major enterprise application vendors were beginning to tout their integrated workflow capabilities. Workflow became a mandatory part of all software RFPs.
