Shadowy, unpleasant owner who relies upon ignorance

The fact that hidden in the terms and conditions of this site lay the fact that the owner has total rights over anything submitted is one thing. The really unpleasant side of the site is the fact that none of this allowed to be mentioned on the site itself (even when mentioned in a non-negative fashion).

The funny thing is, that it isn't actually legal, under UK law, to 'steal' someone's copyright in this manner. You can find out why, and what to do about it, here.

The owner perpetuates a myth on this site that images must be uploaded at full size and without any copyright wording on them because that makes them more pleasant for other to view them. This is nonsense as beyond a certain size, images cannot be viewed properly due to the limitations of screen resolution.

He wants images to be uploaded at full size and unblemished for sales purposes. Many of his members are posting in total ignorance of what is really happening and the real motives of the owner.

An agressive, morally bankrupt owner who relies upon ignorance of his members and controls his site with an iron fist.

Great system - try it for yourself

I'd go and join up and try it and make your own mind up, www.ukexpert.co.uk.

It is in fact probably the longest established community of its type in the UK, and they have been doing what they do for over 20 years now. Some of the members there have been featured by the BBC. In fact despite claiming to probably be the longest established community of its kind, as well as demanding full sized images etc.... they are far from welcoming.

I think you'll find the above is sour grapes from someone thrown off there. Looking at their comments above you can see why they might not be wanted. I'm surprised this site allows personal attacks by banned users from other systems.

Not understanding why some sites prefer quality full size photos instead of the very small low res photos some other sites will only allow is one thing, inventing lies about sales of photos is another. That community has never sold a single member photo in over 20 years. You can in fact see their members thanking them for helping them sell their images.

They also give out lots of good prizes to their members as well.

See you over there...

Why Anonymous

I did go and take a look and found that the administrator was just as dicourteous as described.

In fact despite claiming to probably be the longest established community of its kind, as well as demanding full sized images etc.... they are far from welcoming.

I submitted a picture of a chap dressed as Santa Claus, leaping in the fountains of Somerset House during May 2005. I thought it might be included under the section titled Christmas. As a newcomer to the site I would have thought a little polite help might have been forthcoming. No, not even a message. When I asked the reason why my picture wasn't accepted I got a very curt reply with no suggestion as to where it should be placed. I had also mistakenly not turned the picture around, I thought I had - but my mistake. Thinking I might try again I submitted another photo of a different subject - I never had it accepted, and when I asked again, I found I was no longer a recognised member of the site.

I was also told my pictures were too small and incorrectly labelled. I have owned a digital camera since 1990 and was an early adopter of such things. I bought an Olympus which took super photographs, but the images were only 1.9 Megapixels. It cost nearly £900 when new and took very clear pictures (the camera has had many rave reviews). To be told that this was no better than a current mobile phone was somewhat insulting. What about the image or composition?

I took a good look around their galleries, and indeed there are a few very nice pictures, but most are not so wonderful. There were several that had been submitted by the owner of the site that were well below 1.9 Megapixels.

I may in terms of net ettiquette have committed some minor misdemeanors, but I do not believe I was ever rude or offensive. May be in the busy world of moderators there is no time for courtesy. I am writing this with no feeling of sour grapes, just as a plain honest report of my experience. I certainly made no personal attacks. The final remark made to me ended with a phrase suggesting I might like to "just wander off somewhere else".

So no thanks, I doubt that you will see me over there again, and just one last question, why was the post anonymous? Are they afraid of being banned

Michael George

PS This is my first attempt at submitting something here. So please forgive me if I have got things wrong. Please tell me where I went astray. :-)
