The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
The University of North Carolina was established in the year 1789. It is located in the downtown of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It is the oldest among all University of North Carolina institutions. The university has a rich endowment of $2.3 billion which goes a long way in supporting its research activities. It is a public and co-educational university. The flagship of the University of North Carolina system, it is especially known for its unmatched education and research activities.
The university has produced many academicians like Mary Sue Coleman who is the current president of the University of Michigan, Carol Garrison who is the current president of the University of Alabama at Birmingham. It also gave to the world poets Russell banks and Donald Justice. The list of entrepreneur includes William B. Harrison, the former CEO and Chairman of JP Morgan Chase and Hugh McColl, former CEO of Bank of America. It also gave America its 11th president James K. Polk and Caleb Bradham, pharmacist and inventor of Pepsi-Cola.
According to the 2007 rankings released by U.S News the university is ranked joint 27th with Univ. of Southern California and Tufts University (MA) in the country for undergraduate programs. It is ranked among top five public universities. It is 4th among public universities in research.
The university offers more than 100 programs in various areas of study.
Number of undergraduate student enrollment is about 16,764. Number of graduate students is about 10,512 and post-graduate about 10,512.The university has18% out of state students. The minority representation in the college is 1% American Indian/Alaskan Native, 5% Asian/Pacific Islander, 11% Black/Non-Hispanic and 2% Hispanic/Latino. The faculty strength is about 3,100.
For those who are interested in living on campus the university has a big campus residence hall to accommodate 6,794 students which also provides meal service with a choice of 19 meals per week. Types of residences include Men's residence halls, Married student housing off campus, Married student housing on campus, Coed residence halls, Institutional apartments, Sorority houses off campus, Women's residence halls, Fraternity houses off campus, International halls. Number of registered organizations is 627; Number of social fraternities is 24, Number of social sororities’ is 19 and number of honor societies is 14. The campus offers many activities which include Academic Clubs, Television Station, Theatre/Drama, Choir, Concert Band, Newspaper, Orchestra, Religious, Sports/Intramurals, Gay and Lesbian, International, Political Activist, Honors/Academic:, Jazz Band, Minority Cultural, Student Government, Marching Band, Phi Beta Kappa, Pre-Medical, Minority Student, Pre-Law, Radio Station, Environmental, Literary Magazine and Yearbook.
The UNC has a pretty decent press which publishes hundreds of book titles every year. Chartered in 1922 the press is over 80 years old. Over the years the press has published many thought provoking and quality books catering to every section of the readers. They also publish books on varied topics and cultures from time to time which keeps the readers enthusiasm in tact.
