The Texas Music Group is an Austin-based independent record company releasing the best music from the Lone Star State and points beyond. It builds on the success of Austin's two most-prominent indie labels of the 1990s, Antone's and Watermelon Records, to create a new, dynamic, and multi-faceted record company ready to meet the challenges of the rapidly changing music marketplace in the new millennium. "In much the same way that the major labels are merging and joining forces, the Texas Music Group unifies our labels into a company that can better pursue the musical mission we've already begun, and expand into new and exciting realms," says Heinz Geissler, Label Group Manager of the Texas Music Group, and the founder and former President of Watermelon Records.
The venture debuts with three distinct labels under its umbrella: the award-winning Antone's Records, one of America's leading blues labels; Lone Star Records, a company devoted to exposing the best roots country acts and singer-songwriters from Texas and elsewhere; and Tres Mojitos Records, a new label that will mine the rich musical heritage of Cuba as well as showcase the finest Cuban music being made today. This synergistic alliance allows each individual label to focus on recording quality music at its best, and then mutually support their collective efforts to deliver that music to the marketplace in the most effective manner. The Texas Music Group also creates a base from which additional ventures and alliances can be launched, starting with a reissue label, yet to be named, that is expected to begin releasing classic albums, currently unavailable on CD, in early 2001.
"The Texas Music Group is structured to allow us to enjoy the advantages of the intimacy of a small label with the clout of a larger company," explains Geissler. "Each of our imprints enjoys the small-scale attention to musical quality and innovation of an independent label, enabling us to devote to each project the attention and care it deserves. At the same time, our collective strength will allow us to promote and market every release with the clout of a larger label." By creating a new "mini-major" in the independent music world, the Texas Music Group will take the spirit of America's most musical state and apply it with a global impact.
