Minx Bead Jewelry

Description

Hi, I'm Kathy, otherwise known as the Minx. I've been playing with beads since I was a little girl. My Mom and I would sit around the kitchen table with boxes of dusty old seed beads that had once been a glass door curtain, stringing them on dental floss to make necklaces and bracelets.

My artistic juices flowed in other directions in the 80s, and I graduated from the Maryland Institute College of Art with a BFA in Illustration in 1988. Shortly thereafter, however, I took a seed beading class there on a whim, and I became addicted. Working with tiny beads seems like it might be difficult or stressful, but I find it to be extremely relaxing. Because one must concentrate on the color arrangement and on picking up the beads with a needle, it's difficult to think about anything else. It's a great way to calm down, to spend an hour or four thinking of nothing, while something beautiful unfolds in front of me.

Much of my work has an Asian theme. While working for an auctioneer, I came upon a Japanese doll that came with tiny clay Noh masks. Each mask had two holes for attaching a band to fit around the head of the doll. Anything with two holes in it can be a bead, so I was inspired to use them in my jewelry. Obeshimi Reaching, Buddha Boy, and Jester are a few of the results of this inspiration. More recently, I've gotten into using boulder opals, mixed with other elements such as Chinese coins, as the focal elements of my designs.
