The Gathering Place
Description
The mission of The Gathering Place is to provide a supportive environment for persons with severe and persistent mental illness, focusing on strengths rather than limitations, in order to facilitate life choices and more independent living.
It was founded to enhance the quality of life of individuals with mental illness. Families within the Houston Alliance for the Mentally Ill, came together and conceptualized a daytime program to serve not only their family members but others who appear to have diminished quality of life. The Gathering Place opened its doors April 7, 1986. It may be one of the first facilities of its kind in the United States
The doors are open to any person 18 years or older regardless of race, color or creed who have a mental illness, are currently under the care of a psychiatrist, and want to be in a supportive environment with their peers.
