Description
TaxAid is a charity that helps those on low incomes who get into difficulties with HM Revenue and Customs and cannot afford representation. We have a national helpline and see people face-to-face in London and Birmingham. We also represent the low-paid in consultations with the government and HM Revenue and Customs – our guiding position when considering tax policy is that the poor should not be disadvantaged by the tax system. An ideal tax system would be simple, efficient and fair. The more complex the system, the less chance there is that unrepresented taxpayers can cope with it adequately. Growing problems stem from a requirement to self-assess within a system which is ever more complex. And this is for people who are often least well able to grapple with the complexity of the law and HM Revenue and Customs practice.
The people who need our help may be employed, self-employed, out of work or retired. We help anyone on a low income, which we take to mean income before tax of £15,000 a year (or just under £300 a week).
TaxAid is independent of government and believes that everyone is entitled to understand the tax that they are asked to pay, and have access to independent advice and assistance concerning their tax liabilities.
