The Taupo Native Plant Nursery is located on a 20-hectare site on the northeast edge of Taupo township. The nursery has been in existence for over 40 years now. It was part of the Department of Conservation, which was then required to grow and supply native plants for the restoration of scenic reserves, forest and national parks. It was certainly the first specialist revegetation native plant nursery in New Zealand and has remained the leader in this field to the present day. Today we produce over 1.7 million plants despatching them to destinations New Zealand wide. The Taupo Native Plant Nursery team comprises 40 full-time staff and up to 25 casual staff.
Our primary objective here at Taupo Native Plant Nursery is to provide hardy ecologically sourced native plants. We advocate and promote conservation by providing rehabilitation of our natural environment.
Large and medium scale revegetation / restoration schemes, including those undertaken by Transit NZ, government departments, local and regional councils, land developers, conservation groups and other large land owners. These schemes include roadside and motorway plantings; coastal sand-dune plantings; wildlife habitat enhancement; alpine restoration; natural wetland plantings; and more applied uses such as effluent treatment plantings.
