Title

Tamastslikt Cultural Institute | Cayuse, Umatilla and Walla Walla Tribes

Description

Tamástslikt Cultural Institute opened in August,1998, but it had its visionary genesis in the early 1990's. That's when Oregon was planning for the sesquicentennial of the Oregon Trail. While the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation - the Walla Walla, Umatilla and Cayuse - have little reason to celebrate the Oregon Trail: it led to war and to a huge loss of land and people for the Tribes; nonetheless they felt it was important to mark the occasion. They also felt that it was important for their view of the Oregon Trail story to be told. This vision led to the cultural institute, several years in planning, two years in building and now over one year in operation.

The institute was designed by Jean Jacques André, of Vancouver, British Columbia. This firm has designed and supervised the development of magnificent museum and cultural center exhibits worldwide. The owner of the Institute is the Confederated Tribes of the Umatilla Indian Reservation (CTUIR) , a government of a sovereign nation, which governs the remaining portion of the land given to the Tribes as a reservation by treaty with the United States in 1855. The Institute is financed by many sources through its non-profit fund-raising efforts, by the federal government and, as its largest donor, by the CTUIR. It has a membership program, which so far has been joined by 150 members, all of whom are recognized at the Institute.

The Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla once numbered more than 8,000 people. Our confederation now has 2,198 enrolled tribal members. We are a small group of people who have lived and died close to this land for more than 10,000 years. We are a small group of people bound together by blood, by culture, by history. We are a small group of people who have maintained our traditional song, dance, art, language, clothing, religion, and food, despite significant events and changes in our lives.
