History
The name Stevens has been derived from a well known American family, of colonel John Stevens which was committed to excelling in American engineering since the early eighteenth century. The credit for the invention of first American built steam locomotive-rail the rail road track, iron clad vessels for the U.S. army goes to this family. The will of Edwin Stevens, one of the sons of Colonel John Stevens in the year 1868 mentioned the desire of founding a technological college with the family's name. The will had left a large contribution of funds and land for the purpose of construction of the college. Initially after the establishment of the college in the year 1870, the curriculum was rigorously dedicated to engineering and science only. The college enhanced its academic fields in the year 1907 and included management studies as well. Till the year 1971 Stevens institute was a male only college but now it included women for the first time. The college became the first institute to emphasize the need of personal computing in the United States. It also became the first college to have the nation’s first intranet facilities in the campus. In the year 1988 the college elected its sixth president, Harold J.Raveche, who is still the president. During his tenure the college has undergone a complete transformation program to suit the needs of the global scholars.

Thus the awards and recognition received by the institute speaks of its excellence in the field of technological education.
Student Life
The Stevens Institute of Technology offers a very good life in the campus. Despite of having a diverse conglomeration of different cultures, traditions and groups of people it is like one family working towards the achievement of one goal that takes them to the zenith of their careers. The college has an excellent student service center (SSC) which looks after the admission department and is located in the wesley J. Howe Center. The college also offers financial aid to the needy students and the zealous students may contact the counseling and support officials who are cross trained in answering the commonly asked questions or issues. The campus is very well connected through intranet and there are network ports, touch screen computers for easy access to information’s all over the campus. The kiosks can be accessed for 24 hours. These facilities certainly make the life convenient for the students in the campus.
