WELCOME to STAR BIBLE

Description

One summer day, preacher Joe Watson was mimeographing the Canyon Caller, a weekly church bulletin in Canyon, Texas. This process seized the attention of a 15 year old boy and led him to say, "If you could make a teaching sheet for giving to every house in Canyon, my friends and I could hand-deliver it once a month." Joe Watson set about to produce such a paper and gave it the title, "Truth." It was delivered by hand to the one thousand homes in the town on a regular basis for several months. That young man's name was Alvin Jennings, Star Bible's founder and present director.

He wrote his first tract in Saskatoon, Canada, in 1953: "The Thief On The Cross: Was He Saved Without Baptism?" Five thousand copies were printed in Fort Worth, Texas, by J. E. Snelson Printing Company for $100. He bought an old worn-out linotype machine and a platen printing press in 1954 and moved then into the basement of a church building. This required cutting a large hole in the side of the building. After several months of frustration with this equipment, it was hacked to small pieces and carried out as scrap iron.

A monthly 32-page "Star: A Daily Bible Reading Guide," was first published in 1962 by Leon Ramsey at Quality Printing Company in Abilene, Texas. Soon after, R.H. Jennings accompanied his son, Alvin, to New York City, the publications and communications nerve center of the world, in a study of how the gospel might be published effectively. They were guided through one of the largest printing and publishing plants in the world, the massive Watchtower Bible Society, in Brooklyn, just a short while before the senior Jennings passed from this life. He felt that Alvin's energies should be devoted toward the development and distribution of a Bible teaching journal designed to reach the masses. When a mass-mailed paper was proposed by Alvin for mailing to every home in the state of Vermont by direct mail at non-profit postage rates, the challenge was accepted by the other ministers in the state. Jim Bob Jarrell introduced the concept of including the entire first lesson of a Bible correspondence course as part of the mailing piece and R.H. Jennings offered to bear the total expense of printing a special 14-lesson course surveying the Bible. This course, edited by Alvin Jennings and written by fourteen men in churches of Christ, is still available and has had about 35,000 sets produced in eight printings.
