Stanford University is a private institution located in the heart of famous Silicon Valley. It was founded in 1885. The founders of the university, Leland Stanford and wife Jane Stanford named the university after their son who died at the age of 16. Unlike many other institutions who maintained sister schools for women, it had a coeducational education system. Today the university has an outstanding reputation. It attracts students from around the globe. Since its inception the university has strong emphasis on providing progressive education in science, research, social sciences and arts and humanities.

The university follows a quarter system for all undergraduate and graduate degree programs. The undergraduate student body consists of 6,576 students and nearly 8000 students are enrolled in graduate and professional degree programs. Regular faculty consists of 1700 teachers. Tuition fee is approximately $33,000 per year whereas living at campus housing costs $10,367. Most of the students live on campus and are involved in a number of community, social and athletics activities along with quality education.

Rankings and Reputation

In the United States, Stanford is ranked 4th in overall education and in the world it is highly ranked by many news resources due to quality of education in science and research which is a remarkable university achievement. The university is associated with 18 Nobel Prize winners and countless other award winners who constitute the faculty. Not only quality of education and exceptional faculty has developed the institution's reputation but it has also earned it through being a pioneer institution for Silicon Valley. Its top education in science, engineering and business led to the development of Google, Yahoo!, Sun and many other companies and entrepreneurs.

Community and Athletics

Students ratio of male and female are approximately even at undergraduate level where as in graduate degree programs the ratio is 2 to 1. 94 percent of the students live on campus. The University hosts tennis competitions, football matches and many other indoor and outdoor activities.
