Martin Smith and Leone Scott started the Helderberg Sports Academy in January 1999. The sole object of the Helderberg Sports Academy (HSA) was to provide professional sports coaching On 1 May 1999 the HSA started its athletic club when it appointed Doctor
Cecil Rautenbach as its head coach. Cecil came to the club as a senior national coach in cross - country and a senior high jump coach with vast experience in coaching of sprints and field items.
On the 1st September 1999 Cecil took over the Helderberg Sports Academy from Martin and Leone. He reconstructed the athletic club included the following sections, cross - country, track and field, road running and race walking. In each of the athletic codes a head coach was appointed. The head coach for each sports codes is a highly qualified coach who is vastly experienced in the running and coaching of the athletic code. As part of the Policy of the Helderberg Sports Academy a section was also started to provide athletic coaching to the previously disadvantaged athletes from the Helderberg Forum Area.
