Special Reads for Special Needs was founded in May 2000 by Natalie Hale, author, illustrator, graphic designer, and parent of a special needs child.
She says, "Twelve years ago when Jonathan was five and learning to read at home, I looked for picture books like the ones on this site. My son needed them now, and I couldn't find them anywhere. I soon found that there were many parents with the same frustration. Our children had developmental delays, and we needed picture books that were clear and uncluttered, with large type and adequate white space. We needed books that placed the illustrations separately from the text so that our kids could focus on the task at hand: reading."
Over time, in the course of homeschooling Jonathan in reading, Natalie developed the unique format used in this series. She made dozens of books on subjects he loved, and his reading skills developed quickly.
