Description
Osteopathy is a natural form of healthcare that aims to bring the structure of the body into such an alignment that its muscles and joints, as well as the nervous and vascular systems, are all able to function without any undue obstruction or impediment. Put more simply, our bodies work better when joints move freely, muscles contract and relax when we need them to, and our vascular and nervous systems are able to perform their duties unimpeded. When these aims can be achieved, we generally feel less pain and are able to perform everyday tasks in an easier and more efficient manner.
Osteopathy employs a range of techniques to achieve the aims outlined above. These techniques, all of which are safe, include massage, mobilisation, joint manipulation, stretches and, where appropriate, prescription of simple exercises. Advice may also be offered regarding simple, but vital, features of our everyday lives, such as the way we sit or stand, the position of our desks at work or of our car seats, and even the foods and drinks we consume. Occasionally, an osteopath may, with a patient's consent, refer on to a fellow healthcare specialist who may be able to help with a particular problem.
