Description

Mars Hill Ballard meets in a renovated warehouse that used to be Ernst Hardware. Rumor is at one point the place was owned by a Mormon guy. Up north, Mars Hill Shoreline gets free rent at the CRISTA Ministries campus, which was a tuberculosis sanatorium back in the day.

In this odd tradition of structural legacies, the building Mars Hill West Seattle inherited used to be . . . a church. Rather than mundane, however, this is actually a huge deal. Providential, in fact, if not miraculous.

See, in Seattle, zoning laws prohibit the construction of church buildings larger the 20,000 square feet, which makes life tough for large churches like Mars Hill. Mars Hill West Seattle is more than 50,000 square feet, though 10,000 square feet of the building are quite old and need replacement. Since it was zoned as a church before the more stringent restrictions were established, it’s a freak of nature that could not be reproduced within today’s city limits.
