Sozopol (Apolonia, Pontica) the oldest town on the Bulgarian coastline is situated on two picturesque peninsulas on the southern part of the warm Burgas bay at 35 km south of Burgas. Founded in 610 B.C. by Greek settlers from the Isle of Milet and named Apolonia in honor of the god Apolon. Soon the town grew into a big commercial centre and in accordance with the ancient Greek tradition was given the status of a state town.
