Southern Methodist University (SMU), a private university in University Park near downtown Dallas, offering 123 UG, 127 graduate and professional programs and 23 doctorates. Campuses and Colleges
The SMU main campus stretching over 210 acres has some 76 buildings and the SMU-in-Legacy, located to the north of Dallas in Plano, has 4 buildings on 18 acres and the SMU-in-Taos, has 25 buildings in a 295-acre campus in Northern New Mexico.

SMU is offering more than 20 study-abroad programs. Its campus in Northern New Mexico is in a historic fort and has a 13th century Indian pueblo. SMU has several special centers / institutes on subjects like Political Studies, Southwest Studies, Ethics and Public Responsibility, Entrepreneurship, Reading Research, besides, SMU also many continuing education programs.
Student Body
SMU student body has more than 11,000 students, including more than 6,000 UG students, drawn from all 50 states, the District of Columbia, and nearly 90 foreign countries. They represent diverse economic, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Minority students make up 21 % of total enrollments. By Fall, 2006, SMU conferred a total of 3,122 degrees of which 1,606 bachelor’s degrees, 1,153 master’s degrees, 311 professional degrees and 52 doctoral degrees included.
Faculty
SMU has more than 600 full-time faculty members, with over 80 % having terminal degree in their filed. This gives SMU a student-faculty ratio of 12:1.
Brief History
SMU was founded in 1911 by The United Methodist Church. SMU commenced teaching in 1915.

Libraries
SMU’s network of 10 libraries has the largest private collection of research materials in the Southwest America. The Meadows Museum of SMU houses one of the finest collections of Spanish art outside of Spain. Fondren Library, the largest of them has more than 1,000,000 volumes.

SMU brings national and world leaders to campus for lectures and interaction with students. SMU is one of the few universities to have a voting student member on its Board of Trustees. More than 200 campus organizations provide other opportunities for involvement. SMU is one of the top national universities as per the U.S. News & World Report. Cox School of Business is recognized as a leading business education school by BusinessWeek, Forbes, The Economist, Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, and U.S. News & World Report. Dedman School of Law is ranked 43 in the nation by U.S. News & World Report. SMU ranked 16th for 2006 NSCA Collegiate Power Rankings, based on overall athletics programs. SMU provides over 15,000 tickets for football and basketball, for children.
Outreach
Annually, as many as 2500 SMU students serve as volunteers in some 70 non-profit agencies and also participate in Alternative Spring Break service projects throughout the nation.
