Description
Tackling car crime was high on Bournemouth Police’s priority list when they first approached SmartWater in late 2002, with the launch of the theft reduction initiative following soon after in January 2003. Bournemouth Police then initiated an extensive research period - identifying the crime hot spots in Bournemouth, talking to previous crime victims, and exploring the type of vehicles being targeted by thieves. SmartWater was then deployed in a number of monitored “trap cars”. Utilising SmartWater’s Index Solution, an activation of the “trap cars” security system would douse the thief in SmartWater. Due to the high profile media attention of the campaign, the initial target area of Bournemouth Town Centre saw a 71% reduction in car crime. The initiative was then extended, with Bournemouth Police confirming a 25% town-wide reduction in car crime in the first 4 months of 2004 compared with the first 4 months of 2003.
