The history of SMARTguard Software begins more than a decade ago, in medical school, when two classmates began working on a way to address the issues related to a variety of unsafe computing practices including compulsive use by adults and children's access and exposure to illegal or inappropriate content.
In their work as practicing physicians, Dr. Jerald Block and Dr. Richard Goldstein affirmed the need for tools to manage computer usage and prevent the potentially serious consequences of excessive use including divorce, loss of relationships, depression, obesity, disturbed sleep patterns, work difficulties, health problems (eyes, back, carpal tunnel, etc) and legal problems.
Beyond compulsive use, the spread of computers and increased use by children presents additional threats to families. Many parents are unaware of, or concerned by, the PC games that their children play, the time spent on the computer, and the use of file-sharing networks to access illegal, inappropriate, or unsafe content.
