Long ago, in not so-far-away Brooklyn, a young boy named Harry Acker worked in his father's mattress store. He and his father knew every customer by name and business was steady. As Harry's hands worked --- hand tying knots in mattresses --- his mind wandered to the future and dreams of expanding the business. After all, America had to sleep sometime, and everyone needed a mattress. In 1957, two years after his father's death, Harry made a decision to go for the American dream. He opened one store, and then another. He called his dream Sleepy's.
Harry worked day and night to make his dream a reality. He hired only the best salespeople and trained them not just how to sell, but how to listen to customers so they would send their friends and come back again and again. He called these salespeople "mattress professionals," and they were. Harry knew it was important to make every dollar work. He filled his stores with as many brand-name mattresses as possible because he wanted Sleepy's customers to find exactly what they needed for a good night's rest. He followed his abiding belief that every customer deserved the lowest possible price with a guarantee that they would sleep comfortably. And so, "Sleepy's Incredible Price Guarantee" was born. And by delivering the "Same Day or Next Day" - Sleepy's had even more satisfied customers. Then, the advertising budget was increased until absolutely everyone heard of them and Sleepy's became a household name.
By 1977, "the Mattress Professionals" had sold so many mattresses and won so many loyal sleepers, that headquarters needed to be expanded. They moved to a 20,000 sq. ft. space in New Hyde Park. This was still not enough. So, in 1986 they built a 60,000 square foot building. Growth was enormous. In 1994 they moved again to their present home in Bethpage with 60 loading and receiving doors, a 230,000 square foot center of warehousing, administration, sales, training and telemarketing. For the year 2000 and beyond, another 90,000 sq. ft. distribution center was added in Carteret, N.J., with two more facilities planned in the next two years. Sleepy's now has nearly 700 convenient locations in 11 states.
