Argosy Partners is a private investment partnership. The firm was established in 1995 to provide merchant banking and advisory services to small and medium-sized growth companies. As general partner of The Shotgun Fund, Argosy combines its own capital with that of a small number of highly successful investors and entrepreneurs to make strategic investments in private ventures that are experiencing shareholder conflict.
Richard Reid, President, established Argosy Partners in Toronto, Canada in 1995 to invest in small and mid-sized businesses for his own account. Upon recognizing the significant opportunity for investing in private shareholder dispute and succession situations, Richard partnered with Jim Ambrose in 1999 to establish the Shotgun Fund and the Succession Fund. Prior to Argosy, Richard was a Corporate Finance partner of Gordon from 1983 to 1990. At that time, he assumed management of the Canadian Mezzanine Fund and realized an annual IRR of over 55% through final distribution in 1994.
Jim Ambrose, also based in Toronto, has been a general partner in Argosy since 1999. Prior to this Jim was an equity analyst, a consultant to pension plan sponsors, a manager of special projects in the retail industry and CFO of several companies. Jim taught at the Universities of Toronto and Waterloo and co-authored the first Chartered Financial Analyst text, “Managing Investment Portfolios.”
