Hello. Thank you for visiting Seriously Shady. My name is Anne and I am the Proprietor. Seriously Shady was started in 1995 out of my necessity to find real sun protection. You see, my dermatologist started finding those tenacious basal cell carcinomas whenever I visited him. He indicated that we might be able to slow the re-occurrences if I stopped damaging my skin.
Apparently, every time I leave the house when the sun is above the horizon I get varying degrees of UV exposure. These small exposures are cumulative and I apparently had accumulated too many. Well, I thought that it would be easy to stop the exposure. Wrong. There was only one store that was selling sun protection clothing and they asked about $40 more than I could afford for a shirt.
Hats were another matter. There were plenty of hats and caps. I found I had two problems. One was, I took my two teenagers with me to find a hat that looked good. (Advice: never go shopping for yourself with your children along as critics!) Secondly, I wanted true sun protection. I must have tried on 50 hats. Some of them I loved. But, when I held the hats up to the light, tiny points of light shown through the material. None of them met my needs of keeping the sun off my skin. Exhausted from the futile search, I drove the 100 miles back home without a hat.
