Local 82 is a proud member of the Service Employees International Union, which is the largest and fastest growing Union in the AFL-CIO. A partner of the nationwide Justice for Janitors campaign, Local 82 fights to improve the living standards of working families by winning quality jobs with full-time work, health care and better wages for all Building Service workers.
1937 Local 82 was chartered to improve the lives of apartment house firmen and janitors who worked 24 hours a day, seven days a week, with no holidays off, no vacation, no sick leave, low pay and little respect
1960's Privatization sweeps into government buildings and janitors are thrown to the lions. Janitors who were previously employed by the government could provide for their families, buy homes and send their children to college. The largely African American workforce was hit hard. Although the janitors were low paid workers, the benefits and stability of their jobs contributed to the development of a stable working class strata in the District.
