Title
The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association (SDA) - Newcastle & Northern Branch - AustraliaÃÔ largest industrial union.
Description
The Newcastle Branch of the SDA had its origins in 1890 when the Newcastle and County Shop Employees Union was formed on 11 June of that year. Since then it has grown to be part of one of the largest Unions in Australia covering every aspect of the retail industry and with a name that now reflects the wide diversity of our membership - The Shop, Distributive and Allied Employees' Association.
The SDA is a strong, efficient and progressive Union, effectively representing the needs of its members. It is staffed by dedicated officials experienced in dealing with management at the highest level and most of its employees have had retail experience themselves.
The SDA represents members in negotiations with employers in order to improve wages and conditions. Improvements do not just happen; they occur only because the SDA appears before Industrial Tribunals and presents well researched cases. Employers almost always oppose any application to improve wages and conditions.
