Scotiabank's financial services roots date back to Nova Scotia's trans-Atlantic trading business in the early 19th-century. The Canada bank expanded wherever its customers traded. By the turn of the century, Scotiabank — known as Bank of Nova Scotia in Canada — had 38 branches across Canada, the United States and Jamaica. The bank continued to expand in the early 1900s, opening branches in Cuba, Puerto Rico, England and the Dominican Republic.

Now, Scotiabank has more than 12.5 million customers in 50 countries around the globe:

Scotiabank holds more than $500 billion in assets and reported $22.31 billion in revenue in 2008. It is the third-largest bank in Canada, ranked by deposits and market capitalization. The financial services firm holds the No. 92 spot on the Forbes Global 2000 list. Scotiabank has 69,000 employees.

A bank for every customer

The Canada bank has built its business around risk management, cost control, diversification, customer service and quality employees. Scotiabank's mission is to help customers improve their financial standing. To that end, the Canada bank recently added Scotia iTrade, a trading brokerage for self-directed investors.

Scotiabank operates four banking divisions:

  • Canadian Banking
The commercial banking division provides banking and investing services to more than 7 million customers throughout Canada. It includes:
Retail and Small Business Banking
Wealth Management
Commercial Banking
  • Scotia Capital
The investment banking arm serves a variety of corporate, government and institutional investors through ScotiaMcLeod. Scotia Capital offers full-service investment lending in Canada and Mexico. It also provides select products and services to clients in the United States, Europe and Asia.
  • International Banking
Scotiabank's retail and commercial bank arm operates in more than 40 countries outside of Canada. The international arm has 47,000 employees and serves 5.5 million customers in the Caribbean, Central America, Mexico, Latin America and Asia.

A bank that gives back to Canada

Scotiabank is committed to corporate social responsibility. In 2008, the Canada bank gave more than $43 million in donations and sponsorships to a range of organizations. Scotiabank focuses its giving on education, health care, social services and the arts.

Scotiabank also has a strong presence in athletics. It is the official bank of the National Hockey League and National Hockey League Players' Association. Scotiabank Place is home to a professional hockey team, the Ottawa Senators. Scotiabank also sponsors the Canadian Cricket Team.
