Some hospitals and physicians have special expertise in the treatment of spinal cord injury patients. There is evidence suggesting that patients treated by these health care providers ordinarily have better outcomes than patients who don’t. Examples of hospitals with a specialty department include the 16 Model SCI Centers in the United States that are working together to improve the care provided to patients with spinal cord injuries. They are doing this by conducting research, providing continuing education about spinal cord injury, and maintaining a national database.
