rotonde - Heemskerk - a roundabout by Lucien den Arend - cities and public sculpture
Description
In 1998 The city of Heemskerk commissioned me to make a proposal for this location. The traffic circulates around the spot, giving me an extra incentive to make a work which would appear to be different from the different angles of approach. Coming from- and going towards the highway the sculpture projects itself as a triangle. When you approach it from a direction perpendicular to the previous one, you perceive an ellipse.
There is a number of prerequisites to be taken into account: the sculpture should permit a good visibility for the traffic. Although there are theories that blocking the vision, to a certain extent, makes the motorist more cautious. In any case the object should not demand or actively distract the attention. Esthetically speaking, I find that the design should be one which permits casual appreciation, and still it must have a strong presence. And my personal idea is that the continuous changing of position of the spectators - the observing passers by - gives possibilities which should not be relinquished.
